When will the project construction works start and finish?

We will be starting to construct the Mildmay Liveable Neighbourhood improvements from autumn 2024. We expect construction of the various measures to take around 12-18 months to complete. We will notify affected residents and businesses ahead of construction, and will work to keep any disruption to a minimum. We will keep you updated as the project progresses.

How can I get a paper copy of this information?

Paper copies of the information on this page in English and Turkish languages are available to collect from:

    • Mildmay Library, 21-23 Mildmay Park, N1 4NA
    • Mildmay Community Centre, Woodville Road, N16 8NA
    • Day-mer Community Centre, 16 Howard Rd, London N16 8PU

When will you be introducing traffic filters in the Mildmay Liveable Neighbourhood area?

We expect to implement traffic filtering measures in Mildmay in 2025. We will keep residents and businesses in the area updated as the project progresses so that you are aware of what is happening.

    What are traffic filters?

Traffic filters are fixed points on local streets, which most motor vehicles are not permitted to drive through. (See our FAQ "Will anyone be exempt from the traffic filters?" to find out who will be permitted to drive through the traffic filters).

Filters prevent motor vehicles from cutting through local streets in a neighbourhood, while still enabling people and visitors to drive in and out of their streets.

All addresses that can be reached by vehicle before the scheme is implemented will still be able to be reached by vehicle, but there will be reduced traffic in the area as people will not be able to take short-cuts through the area as part of wider motor vehicle journeys.

You can see information about what traffic filters are, and details of our planned traffic filters in Mildmay.

You can find out more about traffic filters in Islington by visiting our FAQs page on our website.

Will anyone be exempt from the traffic filters?

Local Blue Badge holders who live in the Mildmay Liveable Neighbourhood area will be exempt from most of the traffic filters. We also have an Individual Exemptions policy which gives exemptions to all Islington traffic filters to people whose health and wellbeing would be severely impacted by traffic filters.

You can find out more about our Blue Badge holders exemptions policy and Individual exemptions policy on our website.

Will you remove the Newington Green gyratory as part of this project?

The Newington Green gyratory is the one-way road system that goes around the Newington Green open space.

We know that some residents have suggested the removal of the gyratory as part of the Mildmay Liveable Neighbourhood scheme. We are aware that this could bring benefits such as the potential to extend the existing green space, improved walking, wheeling and cycling facilities, and a safer and cleaner environment outside Newington Green Primary School.

While removing Newington Green gyratory remains a future aspiration of the council, it is not something which can be included in the scope of the current Mildmay Liveable Neighbourhood scheme.

This is due to the highly complex nature of the project given that Newington Green is an A-road (A105), part of the major road network in Islington and TfL bus network, and there is a lack of available funds at this time.

When will you create a liveable neighbourhood in the Highbury New Park area and west of Mildmay?

In the future, we expect a separate liveable neighbourhood scheme will focus on the area west of Newington Green and Green Lanes and east of Highbury Barn, which includes Highbury New Park and Canonbury Station. We will be in contact with residents and businesses in this area in due course to hear your views about how we should improve this area.
