Dockless hire bike parking bays consultation

As part of our commitment to making Islington a greener and healthier place, we are working to improve the environment in Islington by improving air quality and promoting the benefits of physical activity through increased walking and cycling measures, ensuring that everyone in the borough has the same opportunity to access transport.

Dockless hire bikes provide a flexible, healthy and affordable travel option for people living, working and visiting Islington and we have seen a significant increase in the use of dockless hire bikes in the borough in recent years. We want to make it easier for people to use environmentally friendly, healthy transport options, while keeping our roads and pavements welcoming and accessible for all people who walk, cycle and use buggies or wheelchairs.

Introducing hire bike parking bays supports our efforts for a more equal borough. By repurposing existing vehicle parking bays, we can provide dedicated parking spaces for hire bikes which will help keep pavements clear of obstructions and support hire bike operators to better enforce appropriate parking.

Proposals for new hire bike bays

From August to September 2023, we held a public consultation on a pilot of ten designated hire bike parking bays.

Following the success of this initial pilot, we are now proposing to implement a borough-wide network of designated parking bays.

We will be delivering bays across the borough in three phases, with the first phase implemented by Winter 2024/2025. Sites for proposed bays have been selected based on a number of factors including:

Implementing this proposal will require repurposing some on-road parking bays into hire bike bays. Each converted parking bay (approximately 10m) will hold space for up to twenty hire bikes.

Next steps

From Friday, 20 September 2024, we will be consulting on proposals for several new hire bike bay locations.

We will be introducing these changes under a Traffic Management Order (TMO), which is subject to a statutory consultation.
