Bike hangars consultation
Please fill in our consultation survey at the bottom of this page to give us your feedback on our proposed new bike hangar locations
Islington Council is committed to creating a cleaner, greener, healthier borough by making travel more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.
On this page under Documents, you can find links to consultation drawings showing all the locations we are proposing to introduce new bike hangars.
A residential bike hangar is a secure bike storage unit providing space for six bikes and is installed within a bay on a residential street. The bike hangar can fit into half a car parking space (approx. 2.5m), and is accessed by a key. Residents can register an interest in a cycle parking space here: Apply for cycle parking | Islington Council(External link).
Bike hangar dimensions: (L) 2550mm x (H) 2030mm x (D) 1325mm
Currently, there are more than 1,200 Islington residents on our waiting list for an on-street bike hangar space. At present, we have installed 498 on-street bike hangars (with 2,988 parking spaces). As part of this work, we aim to install a further 117 bike hangars by the end of 2024. This will provide an additional 702 spaces for residents. By making cycling more accessible and convenient for local people through our on-street bike hangar scheme, we are also working towards our Transport Strategy 2020-2041(External link) and Vision 2030(External link) goals to help people get healthier through active travel and reducing carbon emissions.
How are proposals created
We create proposals for new bike hangars based on a demand analysis, ie the number of applications per street. If there is enough demand on the street or in the area, it would be considered for a future batch of installations. All proposed locations have undergone site visits to ensure the location is suitable for a bike hangar installation. The factors are based on things such as safety, lighting, proximity to demand and distance from street furniture (such as utility boxes and lampposts).
Feedback
Residents and businesses close to each proposed location will receive a physical letter with information about the proposal and how to submit their comments. This letter also includes a QR code that directs residents to this webpage.
We strongly encourage you to participate in the consultation, as your feedback ensures the cycle parking service aligns with your needs and preferences. By sharing your views you have an opportunity to influence the decision making process and contribute to the development of inclusive cycle parking solutions. We will consider all views and use these to inform our final plans so that they meet the needs and demands of the community.
What happens next?
Once the consultation is concluded, the council will consider all the feedback received before a decision is made. While it will not be possible to reply to you individually, all comments will be taken into account. At the end of this consultation period, the council will consider all responses received and produce a report with recommendations prior to decision being made on whether or not to proceed with implementing these proposals.
