About the proposed changes on Fairbridge Road

We are committed to making Islington a cleaner, greener, and healthier place for everyone, and improving the borough’s roads is a key part of this.

As part of our continued efforts to support sustainable modes of travel, including walking and cycling, we are considering environmental improvements on Fairbridge Road.

The proposed improvements include installing new cycle parking stands on the carriageway, in between two small raised areas in the road (traffic islands), which will accommodate planting. The changes will provide a more pleasant and greener environmental for local residents and provide additional cycle parking provision in the area.

    CLOSED: This discussion has concluded.

In response to the consulation that was carried out in November 2023, some changes have been made to the scheme in response to the feedback we received. These changes include moving the location of the new tree closer to the existing kerb to improve visibility, and lengthening the new double yellow lines to allow for loading and parking when a valid blue badge is displayed (see drawing below). The scheme will not result in the loss of any dedicated marked parking bays on Fairbridge Road, or result in any changes to access in and out of Fairbridge Road.

Construction is expected to begin Monday 18 March 2024, between the hours 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am and 1pm on Saturday, lasting one week.

During these works, an eastbound only road closure will be in place on Fairbridge Road east of Charles Street, with no through route from Holloway Road to Hornsey Road. Access to Holloway Road from Hornsey Road will be maintained (see drawing of the diversion route below).

Vehicle access to all properties west of Charles Street from Holloway Road will be maintained, but exit will only be possible via Holloway Road. A signed diversion will be in place. The diversion will be via Holloway Road, Tollington Way and Hornsey Road.

To allow us to carry out the works as quickly and as efficiently as possible, we will be introducing temporary parking restrictions on Fairbridge Road. These restrictions will be kept to a minimum and we will ensure that signs are put up well in advance to give residents as much notice as possible of any restrictions.

We will make every effort to keep any disruption and noise to a minimum. The contractor’s actual work times may vary depending on the nature of the works and the weather conditions. We do not have any plans to work outside of the above permitted working hours.

If you would like more information, on the improvements we are making in your area, please email environment@islington.gov.uk. Alternatively, you can call 0207 527 2000, or write to us at the address below.
