Extend Santander Cycle scheme

Hello,


I was wondering if there is any plans to extend the Santander Cycles Scheme to cover Islington.

The scheme is the most convenient and affordable cycle scheme in London and, on top of it, is way more neat than having just random electric bikes (lime, etc..) parked along the streets.


Islington is also very central and I am very surprised it is still not covered by Santander Cycles.


Is it possible to consider extending the scheme?

Hello David,                                                                                                                                                                                                                    The Santander scheme is operated and managed by TfL and we would like to see the scheme expand to other parts of the borough. We have been lobbying TfL for this, however TfL has advised that additional cycle hire docking stations will only be considered where these can form part of the existing or expanded network rather than isolated sites.  Currently Santander docking stations are predominantly in the south of the borough and any expansion would require the whole network to expand some way north.                                                                                                                                                                      TfL’s Cycling Action Plan 2 (https://content.tfl.gov.uk/cycling-action-plan.pdf) makes a commitment to significantly expand the network outwards towards the North and South Circular roads. As TfL expands the scheme, they will follow a strategic, data-led approach to identify priority locations. TfL will consider the potential for cycling growth in any target area, the availability of cycle-friendly infrastructure and streets, and the need to reach the most disadvantaged communities, alongside operational requirements. However any expansion is subject to funding and we do not have any further details at this time.                                                                                                                                                                                      The council has engaged with other private cycle hire providers information on these providers can be found here: https://www.islington.gov.uk/roads/cycling/hire-a-bike. Two electric bike hire services also now operate in Islington. Lime and Forest. With the council’s support, two of these schemes were launched in 2021. While we appreciate that private cycle hire costs are more expensive than TfL’s cycle hire scheme on a pay as you go basis, the operators offer discounted rates when signing up to daily or monthly memberships.                                                                                                                                          You may also be interested to know that the council recently introduced its first hire e-bike parking spaces. Between now and the summer, the council is aiming to introduce 50 more bays, with a long-term goal to have a total of 250 bays, prioritising stations, shopping centres, and other busy areas.
