Welcome to our dedicated page for the proposed improvements to Tufnell Park Playing Fields. Here you can learn more about what’s being proposed.

We are committed to creating a greener, healthier, and more equitable Islington. To support this vision, the Council has allocated capital funding for improvements at Tufnell Park Playing Fields.

Progress So Far

In 2023, we used some of the funding to implement essential rainwater drainage improvements to the football pitches. The remaining funds were set aside for a second phase of improvements.

Over the past few years, we have actively engaged with the ‘Friends of Tufnell Park Playing Fields’ through regular meetings. This dedicated group has provided valuable insight that has helped to shape the proposals.

Proposed Improvements

The proposed improvements are divided into two categories: Essential Improvements and Enhancements.

Essential Improvements: These are aligned with council policies and focus on the management of the park, including:

  • Extending the path adjacent to the tennis courts to enhance accessibility. These works are now completed.

  • New sports markings during the football off-season

  • Additional seating

  • Biodiversity improvements, such as reseeding grass areas where required, new hedges, planting, and cutting back the ivy.

  • Cycle parking stands at the main park entrance on Campdale Road. These are due for installation in March 2025.

Proposed Enhancements: These aim to enhance and increase provision in other areas of the park. In January 2025, residents and visitors were given the opportunity to feedback on the following proposals:

  • Climbing wall to be retrofitted to the rear wall of the changing rooms with a safety play surface.

  • Relocating the cricket area to the southwest corner of the playing fields to improve sight-lines and access from Huddleston Road.

  • New pétanque court to be located in the grass area to the north of the football pitches.

The engagement period has now ended.

A summary of the results of the survey can be viewed on the right of this page or at the bottom of the page if viewing on a mobile device.

Survey Feedback

We received a total of 188 responses (137 online, 42 by post, and 9 via email). We greatly appreciate the community's high level of engagement and thank everyone for their valuable feedback. There was strong support for the proposed climbing wall, safety surfacing, and the relocation of the cricket pitch, so these improvements will proceed.

Most respondents did not support the pétanque court proposal. We are committed to listening to local people’s feedback, therefore this proposal won’t be pursued.

Other comments received referred to improvements to accessibility in other areas of the park, specifically seating, as well as upgrading existing facilities.

Next Steps

In accordance with the feedback received, we will proceed with the implementation of the climbing wall and safety surfacing, as well as the relocation of the cricket pitch over the coming months.

The funding originally designated for the pétanque court will be redirected towards other enhancements, including additional benches around the park, and biodiversity improvements scheduled for autumn this year. These projects are expected to utilise the majority of the budget, with any remaining funds allocated to upgrading existing park facilities.
