Islington Greener Together
Islington Council launched Round Two of the Islington Greener Together programme in February 2024, inviting residents, businesses, and community groups—with support from their neighbours—to submit ideas to green publicly accessible spaces in their neighbourhoods. With the support of the council, local people can bring their ideas to life and make their streets greener. One of these streets is Wharfdale Road, where local people have told us that they would like to introduce greening.
Wharfdale Road
The Wharfdale Road site is located close to the junction with Caledonian Road, within the Caledonian Ward.
Co-design workshop
In December 2024 we held a co-design workshop, which local people could register to attend. During the workshop attendees took part in a design exercise, where they shared their ideas on the changes, they would like to see take place on Wharfdale Road. The suggestions made were then used to help shape the initial design proposal for Wharfdale Road that we are now sharing for feedback.
Initial design proposal
Our initial design proposes the following at Wharfdale Road:
Two in-ground planting beds located on the existing pavement build-out. These will allow for the introduction of new plants, creating habitats and food sources for wildlife, supporting biodiversity, and adding colour and interest to the area.
New seating facing west, overlooking the planting beds and Wharfdale Road.
Removal of the existing unused tree pit and reinstatement of the pavement.
Below you can view the initial design proposal:
Tell us what you think about the proposal
To share your views on the initial design proposal, please complete our survey by midnight on Sunday 20 April 2025.
In addition to the survey, we will also be holding an engagement session on Wednesday 16 April 2025, between 6pm and 6.45pm. During the session, attendees can share their feedback and ask officers questions regarding the initial design proposal. The feedback received via the survey and during the engagement session will help inform any changes to the final design proposal for Wharfdale Road.
If you would like to attend the workshop, please register your interest by following the link here (External link) and completing the form. You can also sign up in-person at Lewis Carroll Children’s Library (N1 0ST). We will confirm your place and details of the location by email or phone; please only attend if you receive this confirmation, as spaces are limited. Priority will be given to residents and businesses within close proximity to the project.
Following the feedback period (Monday 7 April 2025 – Sunday 20 April 2025), we will use the feedback received to help inform any changes to the final design proposal for Wharfdale Road. Once the design has been finalised, we will aim to begin installation of the proposal in Summer 2025.
