Islington Clean Air Parents and Islington Council are working together to improve the section of closed road at Highbury Crescent. Working with residents and community groups, the improvements aim to enhance the areas existing character and maximise the use of the street.

The proposed improvements include:

  • promoting a safer and more sociable environment for children, families and all users of the Fields
  • enhance walking and cycling
  • increase urban greening
  • enhance amenities on offer, such as seating

Funding for the Highbury Crescent Closed Road was from Islington Greener Together, which enables residents, businesses and community groups to apply for funding to transform grey spaces into green. The engagement period has ended for this project.

Works are due to commence on 3 February 2025 and will be complete by 12 February 2025. The works include:

  • creating a more social space with new seating and colourful road markings
  • raising the pedestrian crossings to encourage pedestrian priority
  • installing new planters at both ends of the road
  • separating a cycle lane from a pedestrian zone by relocating the existing planters

Planting and the installation of the benches will occur shortly after the main works are complete
